Der Bahnhof wurde 1858 anlässlich der Inbetriebnahme der „k.k. privilegierte Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn“ eröffnet. Die 1951 errichtete Bahnhofshalle steht heute unter Denkmalschutz. Nach der Fertigstellung des Wiener Hauptbahnhofes 2015 hat der Westbahnhof nur mehr regionale Bedeutung.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the "k.k. privilegierte Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn" the Westbahnhof was opened in 1858. The station hall was built in 1951 and is a listed building today. Upon completion of the Wiener Hauptbahnhof in 2015, the Westbanhof has only regional significance.
